Experts believe that 2024 will be the year of automation, as 73 percent of US companies have already adopted AI in at least some areas of their business.¹ Organizations will aim for full automation, transforming the entire organization to increase efficiency and reduce operational costs. 

As a result, AI is predicted to have an impact on about 40 percent of employment globally, complementing and replacing certain positions in the process.² Some of the most impactful automation technologies in 2024 include Conversational AI, AI-Driven Document Processing, and Robotic Process Automation (RPA). These technologies will bring significant efficiency gains and improvements in various industries. 

2. There will be an increased demand for temporary workers and contractors 

In 2024, the demand for temporary workers and contractors is set to rise significantly, driven by a combination of factors. One major factor is the growth in the contract or temporary staffing services market. This market is expected to reach a market value of USD 130.20 Billion by 2030, growing at a notable rate between 2022 and 2030.³ Companies will continue to rely on temporary workers and contractors to fulfill their staffing needs. 

Another influencing factor is the projected decrease in the labor force participation rate, which is expected to fall to 60.9 percent by 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.⁴ This decline could lead to more opportunities for temporary workers and contractors to bridge the gap in the workforce. Additionally, the aging population is also a contributing factor. As the dependency ratio of older people increases, projected to reach 30 by 2024, there’s a likely increase in demand for temporary workers and contractors, particularly in elderly care and support. 

3. Discussions on returning to the office will persist and flexibility will be necessary 

There have been debates about the impact of remote and hybrid work on productivity, culture, and employee well-being. While some executives believe that remote work can lead to better well-being, there are concerns about work-life boundaries and social isolation.⁵ 

There’s a clear trend towards remote work, supported by technological advancements. However, employee preferences are still the major driving force, which is influencing the ongoing evaluation of hybrid and remote work arrangements. 

Looking ahead, several factors, such as demographic changes, evolving cultural expectations, and technological improvements, are expected to shape the future of work flexibility. By 2025, it’s estimated that about 32.6 million Americans, or 22 percent of the workforce, will be working remotely.⁶ 

This strong preference to work remotely is pushing organizations to offer a range of flexible work options, including hybrid models that combine remote and in-office work, flexible schedules, and specialized workspaces for different types of tasks. These trends suggest a complex and evolving landscape for work arrangements, reflecting the diverse needs and expectations of the modern workforce.
